I found a photographic image that had a pose and presence that I liked. Then I worked on an ink and pencil drawing of the borrowed image to see how the composition would look.
Then I made three canvases and painted backgrounds on each at the same time. This gave me a base that would hopefully complement my portrait that is overlaid in acrylic paint.
